Students read about The Great Awakening and the Enlightenment last week. They'll be jotting notes in their History Journal.
Students will then learn about the following people:
- Thomas Hooker – Founded Connecticut; helped write the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut
- Charles de Montesquieu – Enlightenment thinker who developed the concept of separation of powers
- John Locke – Enlightenment leader who stated that people have natural rights to Life, Liberty, and Property
- William Blackstone – Englishman who wrote the analysis of common law into language understood by common people
- William Penn – Founded the Pennsylvania Colony; supported religious tolerance & advocated for equality for all, including Native Americans and women
Finally, after drawing the straw with their subject's name, students will create a tombstone modeled after Puritan Gravestones. See Homework page of my website.
